The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
