The star has given the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound honor winnings to the trust for venues, which works to preserve the UK's grassroots live music spots.

He was awarded the award on October 16 as his new release his work was named the top album of the past year.

Fender has chosen to give the cash to the trust, in recognition of the vital role grassroots venues played in his initial steps.

"As an artist would not have achieved this success if it weren't for all the performances I played around the North East, and further afield, when I was starting out," said Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – roughly 16% of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, top acts like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by applying a small levy to their admission fees, which supports independent venues.

Sam Fender also participated, raising in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help numerous small stages across the UK.

The donation supported venues that were dealing with possible closure due to difficulties stemming from water damage, blazes and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Some locations obtained financial assistance in upgrading facilities and sound and lighting systems that helped artists and audiences.

"The concept that money from concerts in large arenas helps the local stages, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just sensible," the star has said.

Fender is not the first artist to donate his Mercury Prize winnings to worthy causes.

In Pulp received the prize in 1996 for their release Different Class, frontman Jarvis Cocker announced that the group would donate their prize money to the charity War Child.

In 2002, musician Ms Dynamite divided her prize across multiple good causes, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I gave a grand to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed better apparatus," she shared with the media.

Previously, the band gave their winnings to the local youth club that supported their act, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Also the 1994 recipients they donated their prize to a MS organization after a friend was identified with the condition.

"The victory was sufficient," remarked vocalist the singer. "The cash was the cherry on top but we could do without the extra, because we had the honor. So our winning impacted somebody else's life."

In the past week, the trust shared it had protected a couple of local spots in that region, by placing them under public stewardship.

One venue in that area and the other in that location were bought under the public acquisition initiative, which is backed by the arts council and supporters who buy "ownership units" in the venues.
