European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
