Colombia's President Warns 'I Will Resort to Weapons Once More' if United States Launches an Attack.

President Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have escalated the volume of their exchange, further raising strains bilaterally after US forces struck Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He has drug factories and processing labs and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Growing Tensions coupled with Allegations

Addressing the press over the weekend, the US president hinted at similar use of force against Colombia, claiming the country faces serious problems and governed by an unwell individual who enjoys creating narcotics and trafficking it to the United States."

Although Colombia is the world’s largest source of the narcotic, no proof exists implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the business.

A Frayed Relationship

Colombia has long been a staunch collaborator of Washington in the campaign against drug trafficking and received bipartisan support in the US capital, however, the relationship have worsened dramatically following Trump was elected.

The nation's illicit drug economy is largely controlled by criminal organizations including the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the demobilized Farc, most of its former fighters demobilised following a landmark accord.

Petro's Defiant Rebuttal

In response to a query whether armed intervention like that in Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump said: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who disarmed decades ago, rejected the accusations. "I am not an illegitimate leader and certainly not involved in narcotics," he stated.

"He comments without knowledge. Cease defaming me," he posted in a message.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will turn into numerous insurgents in the hills. And if they detain me, whom many of the country admires and supports, they will unleash the powerful force of the people," he admonished.

From Insurgent to Statesman

He passed part of his youth as a member in the left-wing M-19 guerrilla group although reports indicate to have ever took part in armed clashes. Following his disarmament, he participated in writing the nation's constitution in the early 90s subsequently becoming an influential politician. He held the office of mayor of Bogotá prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow to abstain from using a gun ... but for the homeland I shall resume arms again," he said.

Reinforced Protection and Cross-Political Opposition

The Colombian defence minister stated that the president’s security detail had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s political right have expressed support with the US president, but voices spanning Colombian politics have condemned the possibility of an invasion against their nation.

Diplomatic and Financial Strains

The US revoked the president's entry visa subsequent to he called on US troops to disobey orders that violate law. Later, in October, authorities imposed economic restrictions against the president, the first lady and several key allies.

Concurrently while America bolstered its forces in the region and striking alleged narcotics traffickers to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces executed attacks on maritime targets in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
